In late July, CET in collaboration with the Faculty of Education and Social Work hosted six distinguished Mongolian academics from the English language department of the University of Humanities in Ulaan Bataar. Dr. Lesley Harbon, Director - Study Abroad in the Faculty of Education and Social Work accompanied the academics on the first of their two visits to CET.

During this first visit they were briefed on CET’s new EAP curriculum and then on their second visit they observed separate demonstration lessons. The visitors expressed a keen interest in CET’s new methodological approaches in the teaching of writing.

The Mongolian Fellows, [all women] led by Professor Dr Manaljav Luvsanvanda greatly impressed all they met here.

Professor Derek Armstrong – Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work presented certificates and gifts to the visiting academics for their acchievments.

It is hoped that in future more collaboration will lead to opportunities for programs such as teacher-exchanges between CET and the Department of English in the University of Humanities in Ulaan Bataar.

The HOC MAI - Foundation

The Hoc Mai Foundation

HOC MAI based at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney has built up a wonderful reputation for the development work they do in the health care sector in Vietnam. The foundation, through its fund raising efforts, provides both Vietnamese and Australian medical personnel, allied health professionals and students, with on-the-job training and professional development in each others countries.

Janet Conroy on behalf of CET was pleased to welcome a group of some 30 Vietnamese doctors and other health professionals to the first of ten two-hour communication skills training workshops on 16th July. The group which includes a number of senior medical staff and consultant specialists from major Vietnamese teaching hospitals have been given clinical placements at Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore and Westmead hospitals and other medical establishments in Sydney.

The key feature of the program is that it is need-based and responds to the particular and immediate workplace communication requirements of the participants. The weekly workshops are designed to give the participants an opportunity to reflect on their work performance and to bring their experiences to class for trouble-shooting and problem solving exercises. Role-plays are an important component of the program.

IMG Graduation

International Mentoring Group (IMG) is a Sydney based company established by Jane Lee, with strong links to South Korea. CET has played an integral part in the expansion and success IMG has achieved from small beginnings in 2005. South Korean university students are selected for two month work experience placements with Australian companies and non-profit organizations in Sydney twice a year during Korean holiday periods. They attend a two week intensive English Preparation for internship program before commencing work experience.

In the 21st century people with the ability to effectively communicate across language and cultural boundaries are increasingly in demand in the international labour market. IMG and CET have collaborated to develop a learning/training model that could suit a number of other countries.
