How to fill in your undergraduate application

The following step-by-step instructions will help you fill out your application form and answer any questions you may have during the process.

Correctly completing each section of the application form will ensure that the time taken to assess your application is kept to a minimum.

Section 1

Section 1

Please indicate whether you have applied for entry to the University of Sydney previously so we can locate your records. If this is your first application to the University of Sydney, please check the "No" box.

If you hold any current visa for entry into Australia, please tell us which type (for example: tourist, business, student, humanitarian). If you do not currently have a visa, simply check "No."

Section 2 - Course Choice

Section 2

Click on the image to see an example of how to fill in this section.

You can nominate up to three courses that you would like to apply for, in order of preference. You will be assessed initially for your first preference, but should you not be eligible for that particular course, you will automatically be considered for your second preference and then for your third.

Please write the name of the course(s) in full, along with any specialisation if required.

Make sure to include both the CRICOS Code and the Course Code. These can be found by looking up the course name in the Courses database.

Don’t forget to indicate the semester and year that you want to start your course (not all courses have a July entry available).

Some courses have similar names, therefore it is important that we get all this information to make sure that we know exactly which course you wish to apply for.

Section 3 - Scholarships

Section 3

Please tell us if you hold a scholarship which you will use for your intended studies at the University of Sydney.

Make sure to write all your names as they appear in your passport and your educational transcripts.

Your date of birth should be written as DD-MM-YYYY.

Your country of citizenship is also called your nationality. It is usually the country you were born in.

Your permanent address is the one that you consider your permanent home. It may be where you currently live, or it may be your family’s address if you are temporarily living somewhere else.

Your correspondence address is the one that you would like us to send any printed information to. If it is the same as your permanent address, simply write “As above” on the first line and leave the rest of the address blank.

You must enter an email address for us to correspond with you. All information about your application, including requests for information and offers of admission, will be sent to you by email to the address you provide here. Please ensure that email from the usyd.edu.au domain is not filtered by your email provider or junk mail settings.

Please provide a telephone number for us to contact you.

If any of your personal details change during the application process, you can advise us by email. Shortly after your application has been received, you will be sent an acknowledgement letter from your Admissions Officer, which will include their contact details.

Section 5 - Agent details

Section 5

If you choose to use an approved agent to help you with your application, then they will fill out this section.

It is not necessary to apply to the University of Sydney using an agent, however they can help you with course choice and applying for a student visa from the Australian government.

Section 6 - Application Processing Fee

Section 6

There are two ways to pay the $100 Application Processing Fee: by bank cheque/draft or by credit card.

If you pay by bank cheque/draft, it must be made payable to "The University of Sydney" and be in Australian dollars.

If you pay by credit card, please ensure that you fill in ALL the details clearly (especially the credit card numbers), and that the signature of the card holder is included.

Sections 7 & 8 - Secondary & Tertiary Studies

Section 7 & 8

Click on the image to see an example.

In Section 7, write the name of your final secondary school (high school) examination. Include the name of the exam/qualification and the country where it was taken, and the year.
If you are applying solely on the basis of your secondary school studies, please see our list of accepted secondary qualifications.

In Section 8, fill in the details of any tertiary studies (university or college courses) that you have attempted or completed. If there is more than one, you should write "see attached" in the course name section and provide all details on a separate sheet (remember to provide all the information asked for in the table).

Normal full-time program duration means the time it would take (in years) to complete the degree or diploma if you were studying full-time.

Class or grade of completed program should be listed on your transcript. This may be a percentage mark (eg, 81%), a grade point average (eg, 3.0), a letter grade (eg, B+) or a description (eg, Distinction). If you have not completed your program, then we will assess your individual subject grades on your transcripts, and/or your final results when they are available.

If you want to apply for credit for previous tertiary studies, check the "Yes" box.

You will need to provide appropriate documentation (see Section 10).

Section 9 - English Language Proficiency

Section 9

Click on the image to see an example.

If your secondary or tertiary studies have been conducted in English, then you usually will not need to provide evidence of English language proficiency. However, we may require proof from your institution that your studies were conducted in English, if the institution is based in a non-English speaking country.

The University of Sydney accepts the IELTS and TOEFL tests as proof of English language proficiency. Different faculties and courses have different requirements for these tests, which are listed here.

Scores from these tests are only valid for two years prior to the commencement of your course.

Section 10 - Documentation

Section 10

Please check each box in this section to show that you have read and understood the documentation requirements, and have included everything that is required.

You must provide either originals or certified copies of your documents. Please note that the University will NOT return any of your documents to you, regardless of the outcome of your application. If you do not wish to submit original documents, then please read the Certification guidelines to find out how to obtain certified copies to send to us (so that you can keep your originals).

Incomplete or incorrectly certified documentation is the most common reason for delays in application processing.

Please note that if you are applying for the Bachelor of Visual Arts, you will also need to submit a Supplementary Application Form.

Section 11 - Declaration

Section 11

Please read this section carefully, and make sure you understand each part.

The University's privacy policy can be found here.

You must sign and date your application personally (it cannot be signed by a friend, family member or agent).
